Former Tour de France cyclist Floyd Landis is the target of a federal grand jury investigation exploring potentially fraudulent activities related to a legal defense fund he set up after testing positive for synthetic testosterone at the 2006 Tour de France.

A source close to the matter says Landis received a letter earlier this month notifying him of a probe being overseen by the United States Attorney’s office for the Southern District of California in San Diego. The existence of the letter was first reported by the newspaper U-T San Diego on Thursday.

Dufner, Knox, and Duke Chase First Tour Win at Zurich Classic: A Fan’s Take

May 17th, 2012 Posted in Tour | Comments Off

As play ended on Friday, April 27, 2012, Jason Dufner claimed a one shot lead in the second round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Dufner has played in more than 150 PGA Tour events in his career, with over $8 million in earnings, but has yet to claim his first championship. Adding interest to this weekend#39;s finish is the presence of Rookie Russell Knox and Ken Duke, only one shot behind, also in search of their first career wins on the PGA Tour.

Jason Dufner

Dufner has 18 Top Ten finishes in 163 prior PGA Tour events. He nearly won twice in 2011, finishing second in playoffs at both the Waste Management Phoenix Open and PGA Championship. In two rounds this week he has averaged 25 putts per round, the best in the field. He has played bogey-free for the last 20 holes, including an eagle at the par-5 18th hole in Friday#39;s second round. Jason Dufner will begin Saturday#39;s third round at 12-under par for the tournament.

Russell Knox

Playing on the Nationwide Tour in 2011, Russell Knox won the Chiquita Classic and finished #12 on the money list to earn a PGA Tour card for 2012. With less than $50,000 in earnings, missing the cut in six out of eight events entered, he has literally struggled to make ends meet in his rookie PGA Tour season. With seven birdies on Friday, plus an eagle at the 18th hole, Knox shot an 8-under par 64 in the second round to tie the TPC Louisiana course record. He is 11-under par for the tournament and will be paired with Jason Dufner and Ken Duke in the final group in Saturday#39;s third round.

Ken Duke

Ken Duke has nearly $6 million in career earnings on the PGA Tour, with 14 Top Ten finishes in 149 events entered, but (like Dufner and Knox) is still chasing his first victory. In his two rounds this week he has suffered only one bogey, at the 16th hole on Friday, posting scores of 65 and 68. Five years ago, he finished second at the 2007 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Ken Duke is playing very well in New Orleans once again, hoping to improve one position this time and claim his first PGA Tour win.

The headliners at the 2012 Zurich Classic of New Orleans include Bubba Watson (2012 Masters Champion and 2011 winner at New Orleans) and Luke Donald (currently ranked #2 in the world). The leaders after 36 holes, however, are three professionals still looking to win for the first time in their PGA Tour careers.

Harold Andrews has played golf (competitively and recreationally) for nearly 50 years. He considers Jack Nicklaus the greatest golfer of all time.

Gregg Allman postponing book tour for heart tests

May 7th, 2012 Posted in Tour | Comments Off

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Poor health hasnt robbed Gregg Allman of his sense of humor.

Just as it seemed the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member was finally over the effects of his liver transplant two years ago, hes been forced to delay his upcoming book tour to promote his new memoir, My Cross to Bear, for heart tests.

But in a phone interview Thursday afternoon he seemed in good spirits as he described his latest health problem.

Its just one of those make-sure tests, you know, Allman said. My heart goes into A Fib (atrial fibrillation) and does those beats — you know, instead of going du-dun, du-dun, du-dun, it goes ta-da-dat-ta-da-doot-doot. Theres a little reggae in there somewhere.

Allman is scheduled to undergo tests Friday at The Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla. He had a liver transplant due to Hepatitis C at the same clinic in 2010 and has been steadily recovering since, though hes been forced to cancel or postpone performances from time to time because of setbacks.

He recently had hernia surgery related to the transplant and says he feels as well as he has in some time. Its unclear if his heart problems are related to the transplant

The co-founder of The Allman Brothers Band and a key figure in rock n roll joined his band mates at last weekends Wanee Festival in Florida.

Thats our festival down there, Allman said. The Allman Brothers started it. I didnt play the whole set, but I played both nights. In all I mightve done 10 songs maybe. It was a lot of fun.

Allman will begin his book tour May 8 if doctors turn up no significant problems. He also plans to hit the road this summer with the Allman Brothers, something he feels he owes his fans.

I know theres been a lot of people that have had their hearts set — God bless em — on seeing me and my boys perform and seeing me and the Brothers perform, Allman said. And because of this virus and all these damned surgeries, I had to cancel. Ive always really held that sacred and a no-show I am not. Id like extend my apology to them. Its just kind of a bigger bump than I expected in the road, and as of this summer Ill be there with bells on in the future.

Janet Duca Norton: A fascinating tour of historic homes at Stanford

May 3rd, 2012 Posted in Tour | Comments Off

The eighth annual Stanford Historical Society House and Garden Tour showcased an interesting mix of vintage campus homes and gardens designed by prominent Bay Area architects.

Tour co-chairwoman Susan Sweeney said, This years tour celebrates our newest book, and features houses and gardens profiled in the book.

About 500 people visited five residences and two Stanford-owned properties on the April 22 tour that included two English Tudors, a pair of Spanish revivals and early homes in the lower San Juan area of the campus.

It was the second time professor emeritus John Harbaughs Henry C. Collins 1929 Tudor style home was on the tour. It is a favorite with its large living room and library, hand-crafted china cabinet and model train in the garden. While he and his son, Dwight Harbaugh, who is the trains owner, took turns running the train, Dwight explained it took more than a year to build the roadbed.

Dr. Gerald Silverberg, professor emeritus in the Medical School, and his wife Donna Silverberg, purchased the 1925 Birge Clark Spanish eclectic style home in 1975. As their family grew older, they decided to replace a maids room and bath with a family room. They contacted Clark, he came to the house, drew the plans (55 years after the house was built) and came for social visits after the remodel.

Wen’s Europe tour cements friendship: Chinese FM

May 1st, 2012 Posted in Tour | Comments Off

BEIJING, April 28 (Xinhua) — Premier Wen Jiabaos just concluded Europe tour is a very important mission this year in improving Chinas relations with the countries of Europe, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Saturday.

Yang, who accompanied Wen on the tour that included stops in Iceland, Sweden, Germany and Poland, elaborated on the visits outcome with reporters before returning to Beijing early Saturday.

The four countries the premier visited, Yang said, are all important nations that have potential in promoting cooperation with China.

During the eight-day trip, Yang said, Wen attended more than 70 activities in a bid to advance the friendly and cooperative relations with those countries and the all-round strategic partnership between China and Europe.

Wen also delivered important speeches on Beijings reform and opening-up policy and its concept of sustainable development to show the image of China as a peaceful, developing, cooperative and responsible country.

The world order is currently undergoing a profound and complicated adjustment, Yang said. The world economy is on a difficult road to recovery, and the euro debt crisis is stabilized and turning for the better but many uncertainties remain.

In Yangs view, both China and Europe are at a crucial moment and face daunting tasks in reform and development. Cooperation between the two sides to achieve a win-win situation has become the common wish because they are in the same boat, Yang said.

Under the new circumstances, Yang said, safeguarding and developing Sino-European relations and upgrading bilateral pragmatic cooperation conforms with the fundamental interests of both sides. It will also help to promote the recovery of the global economy and ensure world peace and stability, he said.

During his visit to Reykjavik, Wen and Icelandic leaders reached consensus on a series of issues, including stepping up Sino-Iceland trade negotiations in order to realize free trade between the countries next year. They also agreed to enhance investments and cooperation, and improve cooperation in exploring geothermal energy and polar regions.

Media believed that Wens visit will bring development opportunities for Iceland and hope for northern European countries to obtain investments from China, Yang said.

Wen also met with Chancellor Angela Merkel in Germany, Chinas major trading parter and main investor. The two leaders also jointly opened the Hanover Messe, a worlds leading industrial fair, Yang said.

Wen put forward a package cooperation plan that covers the cooperation of China and Germany in infratructure projects, investment, trade and finance.

The Chinese premier also visited German auto giant Volkswagen AGs headquarters in Wolfsburg, 230 km west of the German capital of Berlin. He attended the signing ceremony for two joint declarations between Chinese carmakers and Volkswagen, Yang said.

The foreign minister said China and Germany have scored marked progress in bilateral ties since a consultation mechanism was established between the two governments last year.

The two countries markedly improved their political mutual trust and pragmatic cooperation during the course of coping with the international financial crisis, Yang said.

He added that China and Germany will prepare for new cooperation opportunities this year during the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two nations.

During Wens stay in Stockholm, Yang said, China and Sweden signed agreements covering energy conservation, finance supervision, infrastructure and other fields. They also reached consensus on environmental protection, sustained development and innovations, he said.

As an important northern European country, Yang said, Sweden is a key trading partner for China, and vice versa. The two countries, he said, have a broad prospect in cooperation in environmental protection and sustained development.

The minister said in Poland, Wens last leg of his tour, the premier held talks with his Polish counterpart, Donald Tusk. The two leaders reached important consensus on deepening the strategic partnership between their countries.

Both leaders agreed to establish a regular meeting mechanism between the two countries prime ministers in order to enhance political mutual trust and strategic communications, Yang said.

China and Poland will strengthen cooperation in investment, infrastructure, and high-tech fields, Yang said. He said they will also promote a balanced development of bilateral trade and aim to double their trade volume in the next five years.

Wen on Friday visited the Auschwitz concentration camp memorial in south Poland, Yang said.

Only by always bearing history in mind can the world have a bright future, Wen said at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum built to remember those killed at the camp during World War II.

Yang said that Wens Europe visit ushered in a phase of rapid development of ties between China and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE).

In speeches delivered at a China-CEE leaders meeting and a trade forum, Wen elaborated on the guidelines set by China in developing ties with CEE countries and ideas for cooperation in a comprehensive way.

He also had in-depth exchanges with other participating leaders on the implementation of consensus.

The leaders agreed to view relations with one another from a strategic height and a long-term prospective. They also agreed to develop future-oriented friendly partnerships based on equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit.

Wen put forward 12 measures to enhance relations with the CEE countries. He stressed that Chinas bid to strengthen ties with the CEE countries, an important part of boosting China-Europe relations, is in line with the interests of both sides.

Leaders attending the meeting said Wens proposals and measures, which reflected Chinas high attention and pragmatic attitude toward closer cooperation with CEE countries, will be a powerful boost to cooperation between the two sides.

The meeting, which gathered 14 prime ministers and two deputy prime ministers from the CEE region, issued a communique, according to which the expansion of relations between China and the CEE countries is the aspiration of all peoples and in the interests of both sides.

The CEE leaders pledged to intensify pragmatic cooperation with China in such fields as trade, investment, and finance. They also agreed to boost cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

The success of the meeting and the forum is an indication of the rosy prospects of friendly cooperation between China and the CEE countries, Yang said. He said the success also sends a strong signal by the two sides to strengthen cooperation in an all-round way.

Wen also held bilateral talks with the CEE leaders on the sidelines of the meeting, which in effect boosted mutual trust, expanded consensus and advanced bilateral ties, Yang said.

Yang said Wen also advocated Chinas stance on sustainable development during the Europe tour.

Wen said on several occasions during the trip that China will stick to the reform and opening-up policy, and firmly go along the road of sustainable development.

At a Stockholm meeting commemorating the 40th anniversary of the first UN Conference on Human Environment, Wen introduced Chinas practices and achievements regarding sustainable development in a keynote speech.

China is a staunch supporter and practitioner of sustainable development, Wen said. He added that China has made environmental protection and preservation of resources a national policy and sustainable development a national strategy.

Wen urged the international community to note the significance of equal environment rights, the balance between growth and sustainability and global governance in this regard.

While addressing the opening ceremony of the Hanover industrial fair, Wen expounded on Chinas industrial achievements, especially since the introduction of reform and opening-up in the late 1970s.

The premier said China will continue its efforts to build an innovative nation and to achieve sustainable economic growth with coordinated development in all sectors.

To achieve sustainable development of global industries amid the ongoing financial crisis, Wen suggested more resources be set aside to spur the development of the real economy. He also called for more efforts to vigorously push for innovation-based growth of the global economy.

Wen asked for openness and cooperation. The premier said the worlds economies should reject all forms of protectionism, move faster to improve global economic governance and make it fairer and more equitable.

Wens remarks at the fair, widely viewed as a clear signal that China will firmly go along the road of sustainable development, showed Chinas determination in pursuing green development while preserving the balance between mankind and nature, Yang said.

The four-nation tour is a successful trip of friendly cooperation and will have significant and positive impact on the overall development of China-Europe relations.

To tour or not to tour?

Apr 30th, 2012 Posted in Tour | Comments Off

Over the past decade, Ive travelled a great deal; most of the time I plan my own trips which involve a great deal of time online and studying guide books like the Lonely Planet series. The planning can be enjoyable; but often the results can be mixed.

This is because guide books are generally out of date as soon as theyre printed – at least in terms of accommodations and restaurants; most dont give information on local tours – you have to show up to many attractions and hope they have tours in English. Also theres always the unexpected – things you cant plan for.

If youre a single traveller there is always the loneliness factor. Most single travellers agree that the most depressing aspect of travelling alone is eating alone. But there is an alternative: If you have a busy life and dont enjoy making (and being responsible for) your own arrangements you might consider a packaged tour as a viable alternative.

Up to this point Id avoided them for two reasons: First because I tend to think of packaged tours as something mostly old people take – sitting on some large tour bus with name tags reading Hello, my name is Ned – If Im lost please return me to the Seniors Home. The second reason is that I thought they would be expensive compared to what I could do myself.

Recently I decided to try a tour and compare it to do-it-yourself travel. I chose G_ Adventures (formerly known as GAP Adventures) because they offer hundreds of tours virtually everywhere (including Antarctica), are composed of small groups – usually 10 or less; and because they are a Canadian company with a great worldwide reputation. I have several friends who have taken them and swear by them.

They are billed as adventure tours, so you dont expect to just sit on a bus being ferried from museum to museum. My initial fear was I might be stuck in a group of twenty-some-things climbing and repelling off cliffs; something Im get-ting too old for at my advanced age (I just officially became a senior). I was assured that G_ Adventures had tours geared to all ages and budgets which led to my next biggest question – how to choose the right tour.

Choosing my ideal tour was sort of a process of elimination: The company offers over 720 tours in more than 100 countries. I decided I wanted to visit South America to continue torturing the locals with my version of Spanish. The first limiting factor was the dates I could travel. After that I had to make choices based on the type of trip I wanted to take.

The tours are broken down not only by geographical areas, but also by Trip Styles, Ser-vice Levels, and Physical Demand. G_Adventures offers a wide selection of Trip Styles – depending on the type of experience you want.

The first decision I had to make was which Service Level would best suit me. Since I didnt want to sleep in a Yurt or tent or experience a group living experience, I chose the Standard level which featured more comfortable tourist class hotels and guest houses and would travel by public transportation (I had done this in Spain and survived). The brochure stated that this level was ideal for travellers looking for an authentic experience and a little more comfort. That had me written all over it – especially the little more comfort bit. If youre a single traveller (as I am) theyll partner you up with a roommate. If the prospect of bunking in with a stranger isnt appealing to you, many of their trips offer you the option of having your own room for a small additional price.

Prince Harry: Still in the army, wants to serve

Prince Harrys wildly successful tour of the Caribbean may have come to an end, but many now think his role as a diplomat is just beginning.

Wherever the prince goes, the cameras follow. In the third part of his interview with CBS News, Prince Harry made it clear he intends to use all the attention for good causes – specifically, to raise money for a charity he holds close to his heart.

Combining two of his greatest passions – sport and his charity Sentebale – Prince Harry picked up his mallet to raise money at a polo match Sunday in the Brazilian countryside.

The prince co-founded his charity, which works in the African nation of Lesotho, in 2006. He dedicated it, in part, to his mother Princess Diana.
